When is a superlative not the best?

"Here, let me see which towel is cleanest", said my friend and host in Buffalo, Mike. 

I arrived here at midnight.  Did you know you need a passport to drive from Buffalo to Toronto? I did. But it slipped my mind until I was waiting for my flight yesterday.
