Ghost Money

It must be a full moon, because I smell like burnt ghost money. All of the shops have offering tables complete with incense and instant noodles outside of their shops. I don't actually know when people burn their ghost money and put out their offering tables, but many people seem to do it at the same time, and it seems to correspond with the full moon. Either way, I smell like a campfire after taking a short drive around town.

A Life of Beverage

People often ask, "What is life like in Taiwan." I usually don't have a good answer, but while walking back from 7/11 yesterday holding an umbrella, bottled water, and iced coffee, I found the answer. This is a life of beverages. In America I predominately drank water. It was plentiful and drinkable from the tap. But in Taiwan, you'll find me more often than not with a 700ml cup of tea in my hand, or an iced coffee from a cafe around the corner. My favorite and most ordered has to be a bai xiang lu cha, da bei, wei tang, shao bing. Thats a large passion fruit green tea, a little sugar, and less ice. Once in a while I enjoy a Zhen zhu nai cha, or pearl milk tea.

Taichung, my home in Taiwan, claims to be the birthplace of pearl, or bubble tea. Tea shop menus here are huge. My only limit is my lack of language skills. I can only order what I know how to say or read, unless a Taiwanese friend is with me. I do miss tap water. Carrying jugs down the stairs to fill up with drinking water from a machine on the street feels like an unnecessary burden in a modern country. I have no real reason to trust that the water from the machine is potable. Come to think of it, I've never actually seen anyone else getting water from it. To the tea shop!

Cheney Run Amok

Impeach, impeach? Sounds like a good step in restoring America's reputation by holding accountable those who have done so much to harm our country in recent years. He's just the vice president, he's not supposed to matter much. Impeachment holds him accountable for his crimes, and really does nothing to harm the country.

Betel Nut Girls

Betel nuts are chewed all over Asia, but Taiwan has a unique twist on the trade. Betel nut girls, or betel nut beauties work in small kiosks on the side of the road. Normally 3 walls of the kiosk are glass so that passersby can see the girls hard at work wrapping the betel nuts. This flickr gallery documents it well. So next time someone asks you about something unique that Taiwan has to offer the world, share with them the story of betel nut beauties.

Taroko Gorge

I am back from my trip to the east coast. Taroko Gorge was very nice. Traveling in Taiwan always has its frustrations, (Taiwan is not a place I would recommend traveling. Living, maybe. Traveling, no.) but the scenery at Taroko was well worth it. Pictures can't do it justice. We stayed at the Catholic Hostel....or was it the Presbyterian Hostel. I'm not even sure after the holy war that was our hotel reservation. Anyways, enjoy this slide show, or go to my pictures site and look at them at your own pace.

Dragon Boat Festival

Goodbye friends. I've taken off work Saturday, and we have Monday and Tuesday off for Dragon Boat Festival. We're taking a train in the morning (standing room only, 5 hours) to Hualien. Hopefully we can rent scooters from Hualien and drive to our hostel in Taroko Gorge. It should be a few days (one of which is my birthday) of relaxation, hot springs, fun scooter drives, and amazing views.

The Dentist

The receptionist greeted us and motioned for us to have a seat.

"This doesn't really look like a dentist office," I said.

"I've never been to a dentist with candy on the table," David remarked.

"Well, it is Taiwan."

"She's getting us some tea. This is so nice," I said.

A man in a suit approached the table to begin the consultation I assumed. He handed us his business card and sat down. Rhiy Reality Group.

"Umm, I don't think we are at the dentist. How do we get out of this," I asked David.

"Dentist? We want the dentist..." David said, pointing to his teeth.

The Realtor led us to the door to show us where the Hot Shot Dentistry office was located. Maybe he was disappointed that he missed a sale. Or maybe he was relieved that he wouldn't have to speak English. Either way, we felt much better when we got off the elevator and saw dental hygiene posters and tooth-shaped ottomans.

Sophie's World

I just finished reading Sophie's World. The book was suggested by my good friend Stella years ago, but I am just now getting around to reading it. Here is one of my favorite conversations between Sophie and the Philosopher:

'Imagine you were a member of a distinguished council whose task it was to make all the laws for a future society.'

'I wouldn't mind at all being on that council.'

'They are obliged to consider absolutely every detail, because as soon as they reach an agreement - and everybody has signed the laws - they will all drop dead.'

'Oh...'

'But they will immediately come to life again in the society they have legislated for. The point is that they have no idea which position they will have in society...the society would be a just society. It would have arisen among equals.'

Bill Clinton speaks at Harvard's 2007 Class Day

If you have a few minutes,(about 30)listen to this speech given by Bill Clinton just last week. Why is it that only after they leave office can our politicians become reasonable, compassionate, thoughtful people. You see it happen again and again. Maybe its because they no longer have to rely on the support of lobbyists and the funding of corporations. If any candidate could speak with such candor and sincerity now, I would really take the time to listen to that person. I am excited for change in the white house, but none of the candidates really stir me. They are all in their own way pandering to the people who they feel can get them the most votes.

Politics aside, listen to what he has to say, forgetting what it is you feel towards him and his presidency.

(Thanks to my friend, and political sounding board, Teresa, for the link)

Mango Season

Mango season is here! I love mangoes. I've been averaging one a day for the last month or so. They're juicy, they're smooth, they have a complicated flavor, and they keep your digestive system working efficiently.

Rainy Season

This has been life for the last week. Rain rain rain, day after day. I don't remember when it started raining, and I am told that it won't stop soon. We had 200mm of rain yesterday...that's nearly 8 inches.

Every morning I wake up and hear rain. Every afternoon, I put on my rain gear and drive to work in the rain. Even with a rain coat, I get wet, so I drive to work in one set of clothes and change when I get there.

I had a little break with reality inside my helmet on the way home from work today. I was tired of being wet, and I told myself that, loudly...and then I honked at some people just because they were driving near me.

Benny Hinn

Thank you thank you youtube for daily dishing out entertainment to me in 3-minute portions. And thank you , Kevin the Cool Guy for linking to this video on your blog. This had me laughing outloud while watching it sitting in Match Cafe. Is it sacrilegious? I'm not sure if anyone could make a bigger mockery of his ministry than the man himself who, Wikipedia points out: lives in an ocean-front mansion valued at an estimated $8.5 million in an exclusive gated community in Dana Point, California, travels by private aircraft, and stays in hotel rooms costing upwards of $3,000 per night. In December 2006, he sent out a mailing asking for donations towards a new Gulfstream G4SP jet valued at an estimated $36 million.

Tainan

Yesterday, David and I headed south with our friend Ariel to visit Tainan. This trip was about food and history, and the former more than the latter. Here is a photo tour of the day.

This was our first meal. I'm not sure what is was called, or what it was. It was sticky and covered in gravy, and it was good.

For our next meal, we had sticky rice dumplings. I am told this is a traditional food eaten during Dragon Boat Festival. It's glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves with various ingredients. The ones from this restaurant must be exceptional because Ariel's mom had her bring home 15.

In between meals, we visited some historic sites. This was the AnPing Fort, I think. The Dutch colonized Taiwan back in the 1600's, and then were kicked out years later by Mainland China. This sculpture was aptly titled "The subjugation of the Dutch". The fort that the dutch built was later named something like "Building of the red-bearded barbarians". There is also a diorama in the museum depicting some Dutch people graciously bowing to a Chinese emperor and agreeing to leave Taiwan. I guess the winners always get to depict history from their point of view, right?

And then more food. This is called a Coffin Cake. It seemed a lot like chicken pot pie to me. Nothing particularly Taiwanese about it.

At last, the famed Oyster Omelet. Its exactly what it says it is. By this time I was tired of foods with gooey textures.

After dark, we went to the night market. This is a picture of the night market from a distance

This is soap, with a toy inside. Could it get any more Asian cutesy?

This is a red bean cake in the shape of a fish.

A big stewing cauldron of chicken feet. I did not partake.

Two very cute piglets. Again, I did not partake. I was going to buy one, but it squealed when I touched it, and so did I. Not a good quality for a pet or a snack.

And last, a video walk through the night market.
